Earth Day
Earth Day is April 22, 2008
Observed in more than 175 countries, Earth Day has become a world wide celebration since its American beginnings during the Vietnam War. In 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea that in spring 1970, there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment. On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans organized together and took to the streets for the cause of a more sustainable world as part of an environmental "teach-in."
Earth Day has been credited with persuading U.S. politicians to consider the environment in legislation matters. After the First Earth Day in 1970, many important laws were passed in Congress including the Clean Air Act, laws to protect drinking water, wild lands, and the ocean. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established following Earth Day as well. Countless volunteer groups and organizations have sought out Earth Day as a day to make impact, improve human behavior in regards to the environment, and to invoke legislative changes.
How can you make an Earth Day impact?
- Join an Earth Day event
- Volunteer for an Earth Day organization
- Organize your own outreach event
- Use less electricity, even if it's just for one day on Earth Day this year. Set aside one hour in the evening where all your lights are off to raise awareness to your neighbors and friends.
ABC understands the importance of Earth Day and being active in your community. We encourage chemical-free solutions where possible and try to minimize the overuse of any valuable resources such as water.
