Urban Wildlife Management

The population in our cities and towns continues to increase, and as it does, we find ourselves expanding further into undeveloped wooded areas and fields. As a result, we displace the animals that previously inhabited these areas and can only expect people-wildlife conflicts to continue and increase in the future.

Managing urban wildlife problems requires careful analysis of each situation before implementing any type of management solution.

In central Texas, most of the problems associated with urban wildlife center around the raccoon, squirrel or opossums.

Typically, they inhabit wooded areas and build their nests in trees, burrows, woodpiles etc., but as people expand their settlements into these areas, the animals frequently establish themselves in attics and garages to store food and find shelter.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to solving urban wildlife conflict is of vital importance. In some cases, the simple repair of a crawl door may solve a problem. Other times, the elimination of the animal's food source via sanitation may cause the animal to vacate the area as might be the case with raccoons raiding poorly managed garbage.

Rats and Mice

Rats and Mice attack our food in the farm fields, orchards, and livestock facilities, during processing, storage and transportation, and while it is in our supermarkets, restaurants and homes. And what rats and mice don't eat, they spoil by contaminating it with their urine, feces or fur.

In our homes and businesses, rodents damage floors, ceilings, and walls as a result of their burrowing and gnawing activity causing millions of dollars of damage each year.
